SETTLERS OF CATAN TOURNAMENT

The Settlers of Catan was one of the first German-style board games to achieve popularity outside Europe. Over 15 million games in the Catan series have been sold and the game has been translated into thirty languages from the original German. The game has rapidly become popular in part because its mechanics are relatively simple, while its dynamics are quite complex. The players in the game represent settlers establishing colonies on the island of Catan. Players build settlements, cities, and roads to connect them as they settle the island. The game board representing the island is composed of hexagonal tiles of different land types which are laid out randomly at the beginning of each game. Now you can play in a tournament of this classic game.

RULES FOR THE TOURNAMENT

  1. Entry is free.
  2. The tournament will cater for a maximum of 12 players.
  3. Where possible, players will be seated randomly with four players to a table. If this is not possible, players will be seated 3 to a table.
  4. The tournament will run for 1 hour 45 minutes. When this time has run out, the current round will be completed and then one additional complete round will be completed.
  5. A game will end immediately (before the time limitation) as soon as one player scores 10+ points.
  6. The winner of the tournament will be the highest scorer. This is determined by their own points at the end of the game plus the scores of all the players who participated in their game.
  7. In the event of a tie (only) the tied winners will be awarded additional points as follows:
    • 1 additional point for the Longest Road.
    • 1 additional point for the Largest Army.
    • 1 additional point for each Development Card on the table or held in hand (with the exception of Army Cards).
PRIZES: The winner will be awarded the “Governor of Catan” framed certificate and a selection of board games. The runner up will receive a board game.

MAGIC GRAND MELEE

Dust off your decks and fight it out at the Magic: the Gathering Grand Melee Event to determine the best Wizard at the Carnival of Games. The Grand Melee is brought to you by the League of Extraordinary Gamers, a Brisbane based club who have been running Grand Melee events and leagues since Magic: the Gathering emerged in the early 1990's.

RULES FOR THE TOURNAMENT

  1. Entry is free.
  2. Maximum number of players is 12. The game will be split into two separate games if more than 12 players turn up.
  3. Format - Vintage Constructed. Check out the latest list of Vintage legal cards on the Magic: the Gathering website.
  4. No proxy cards are allowed in the Grand Melee.
  5. Players sit in a circle so that everyone has another person on each side. Play goes around the circle and everyone has a range that is determined before the game. You can only attack the player to the left of you, although your global effects still effect everyone within your range. The winner is the last person left alive. Check out rule 608 in the Comprehensive from the Magic: the Gathering website for more details on how Grand Melee tournaments are played.
  6. The following special tournament rules changes/clarifications will be used in the Carnival of Games Grand Melee:
    • Turn markers are not used.
    • Range of Influence is 2.
    • There can only be one Legend of one type in play at any one time regardless of range. Playing a second Legend of the same type will cause the tabled legend to be discarded.
    • The event organiser's rulings are final.
    • Two hours will be allotted for the completion of the tournament.
    • Points: You receive one point for each payer you kill/take out of the game directly. If you are the last player standing you also receive your own point. The last player standing is the winner. Otherwise, if there are 2 or more players left after the two hours, the player with the most points is the winner. If more than one player is on the most points, the game will continue until one player's points becomes the highest.

PRIZES:
The winner of the Grand Melee will receive one Magic booster pack per player in the tournament. i.e. If there are 12 players then the winner receives 12 Magic booster packs. The set(s) will be determined on the day.
